The ideal candidate will have experience overseeing a major capital campaign and familiarity with the Hampton Roads philanthropic community.  This new position will be supported by an engaged Board of Directors, an enthusiastic and experienced CEO and Music Director and excellent outside fundraising counsel, and will join a team of high energy, positive and mission-focused staff and volunteers.

The Virginia Symphony Orchestra – which has been serving as an artistic anchor in the Hampton Roads region since 1921 – currently presents a series of Classics, Pops and Family concerts in various locations in Norfolk, Newport News, Virginia Beach and Williamsburg, and supports many of the region’s other major arts organizations, including the Virginia Arts Festival and Virginia Opera. In addition, the Symphony has an extensive array of educational, outreach and community engagement programs that reach more than 45,000 students and adults each season. The VSO currently operates on an annual budget of approximately $6.1 million, of which it raises 55-60%, from individuals, foundations, businesses, and public sources

Beginning in 2016, the VSO Board adopted a significant new strategic direction which embraces new ideas and work to engage the community beyond traditional audiences.  This shift in focus has resulted in exciting new initiatives, particularly in the areas of health and wellness and education, that have excited new and existing supporters.  The VSO’s new Vice President of Development will lead our passionate supporters to capitalize on this new vision to move forward with confidence into the institution’s second century.
