Arts Notes: VSO presents a flurry of performances before the new season

While the official start of the new music season is a few weeks away, the Virginia Symphony Orchestra is jumping the gun with three nearly back-to-back performances leading up to its fourth concert season opening on Sept. 10, plus one more musical treat.

On Aug. 28, the VSO will offer its world premiere of “Broadway: Then and Now,” at 7:30 p.m. on Christopher Newport University’s Great Lawn. This one-night event was co-conceived by and stars Tony Award-winner Santino Fontana (“Tootsie” and “Frozen”), and Broadway superstar Erika Henningsen (“Just in Time” and “Mean Girls”), with acclaimed music director Andrew Resnick (“Just in Time” and “Parade”), according to a news release.

Developed in partnership with CNU’s Ferguson Center, the program will include such familiar names as “Anything Goes,” “Hamilton,” “Sound of Music” and “Frozen,” all selected to represent the past to present in musical theater development.
