SUMMARY:Benefit Concert for The Muse Writers Center
DESCRIPTION:THIS IS A VIRGINIA ARTS FESTIVAL PRESENTATION. This performance is not eligible for VSO vouchers or subscriber exchanges. Tickets are sold exclusively via the link provided\, or by calling the Virginia Arts Festival Box Office at (757)282-2822.\n\n\nAs America celebrates its 250th anniversary\, we invite audiences to experience the nation’s story through the powerful convergence of words\, history\, and music.\n  \nIn this special benefit concert\, musicians of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra join acclaimed historian and narrator Clay Jenkinson for America Coming of Age-an evocative exploration of three extraordinary American voices: Thomas Jefferson\, Theodore Roosevelt\, and Henry David Thoreau.\n  \nThrough Jenkinson’s vivid narration\, these thinkers emerge not simply as figures from the past\, but as complicated\, searching voices in an ongoing American conversation\, voices asking what it means to build a nation\, to define freedom\, to engage with nature\, and to imagine America’s future.\n  \nMusic becomes another voice in that conversation. Works performed by musicians of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra will illuminate the eras\, ideas\, landscapes\, and emotions surrounding Jefferson\, Roosevelt\, and Thoreau\, creating a rich tapestry of sound and story. Together\, the spoken word and music will carry us across centuries from the founding ideals of Jefferson\, through Roosevelt’s vision of a nation coming into its modern power\, to Thoreau’s enduring call to live deliberately and remain attentive to the natural world.\n  \nAt once concert\, historical journey\, and celebration of American writing\, America Coming of Age asks us to listen anew to the voices that helped shape the country and to consider what their words might mean for America at 250.\n  \nJoin us for an inspiring evening where history is heard\, music tells a story\, and the American imagination takes center stage.\n

SUMMARY:Grieg's Piano Concerto
DESCRIPTION:Folk and Fire\nThomas Wilkins\, conductor\nAdam Golka\, piano \nHannah Eisendle: Heliosis\nEdvard Grieg: Piano Concerto in A minor\nAntonin Dvořák: Symphony No. 6 in D Major \nTwo majestic\, folk-inspired works anchor this moving program led by VSO Principal Guest Conductor Thomas Wilkins. Pianist Adam Golka brings his poetic expression to one of the world’s most beloved piano concertos\, shaped by Norwegian traditional music. In his Sixth Symphony\, Antonín Dvořák weaves the sounds of Bohemian folk music into a heartfelt tribute to his homeland. \nLearn about the pieces\, composers\, and guest artists in this concert with “What About the Music?“\n– \nThomas Wilkins is an internationally renowned conductor and Norfolk native who was named the Virginia Symphony Orchestra’s first-ever Principal Guest Conductor in 2021. He is Principal Conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra; the Boston Symphony’s Artistic Advisor\, Education and Community Engagement; and holds Indiana University’s Henry A. Upper Chair of Orchestral Conducting. \nPianist Adam Golka leads a rich artistic life as orchestral soloist\, recitalist\, chamber musician\, recording artist\, pedagogue\, and innovator. A first-generation American\, born to Polish parents\, Adam has  performed with many of the major orchestras around the world including the San Francisco\, Houston\, Dallas\, Atlanta\, and Seattle symphonies\, the BBC Scottish Symphony \, the National Arts Centre Orchestra (Canada)\, the Warsaw Philharmonic\, the Shanghai Philharmonic \, the Orquesta Filarmónica de Jalisco (Mexico)\, and the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional (Colombia). \nHannah Eisendle is a conductor\, composer and pianist. All three areas have in common an orientation towards the contemporary and a desire to cooperate with artists from different fields. In her compositions\, she is often inspired by extra-musical impressions\, images and other art forms\, which she transforms into sounds. She came to international attention as a composer with her orchestra work heliosis\, which was commissioned by the ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna (RSO).

SUMMARY:Young People's Concert: The Orchestra Rocks
DESCRIPTION:Music rocks when it is powerful and edgy\, and when it propels both audiences and performers into motion. Rhythm\, defined as the organization of sounds in silence\, is a key element in music that rocks as composers and musicians use patterns and grooves to drive music forward. Rock music embodies this propulsive quality with its amplified and electric sounds. Through the Link Up repertoire\, hands-on activities\, and a culminating interactive performance with a professional orchestra\, we will experience how it feels when the orchestra rocks. \nWe hope you’ll join us for this interactive educational concert. Students will be encouraged to sing\, play\, and move with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. \nThis specific performance is geared towards private school and homeschool groups. \n  \n \nYMV\, a 501c3 nonprofit organization\, is in its third decade of serving homeschool families and the community with a faculty and staff of about 30 professional adults dedicated to teaching and training students from preschool through high school. Our students come from all over the Hampton Roads/Tidewater area of Virginia\, including Virginia Beach\, Chesapeake\, Norfolk\, Suffolk\, Portsmouth\, Smithfield\, and Hampton. Some even come from as far away as Williamsburg and North Carolina! Our commitment is not only to teach classes\, but to teach life lessons and Godly principles in a social environment that fosters encouragement and mutual support. The YMV program is intended to enhance and support – not replace – the homeschooling experience. In addition\, we are dedicated to assisting homeschooling parents to provide their children with extracurricular musical opportunities\, such as summer classes\, seminars\, concert opportunities\, performances and ministry outreach.

SUMMARY:Ravel\, Janáček\, and the Art of Alex Sopp
DESCRIPTION:Illustrating Sound\nEric Jacobsen\, conductor\nAlex Sopp\, visual artist\nVirginia Symphony Orchestra Chorus \nMaurice Ravel: Daphnis et Chloe Suite No. 2\nCaroline Shaw: The Mountain that Loved a Bird\nLeoš Janáček: Sinfonietta \n\nOne of the “most beautiful creations in all of French music” (Igor Stravinsky)\, Ravel’s Second Suite from Daphnis and Chloe lushly depicts a love that survives against all odds. Unifying visuals with sound\, “beautifully nuanced” (NY Times) artist Alex Sopp creates a stop-motion animated film to accompany Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw’s The Mountain that Loved a Bird. The orchestra is augmented by an enormous brass section for the invigorating Czech melodies and dance rhythms of Janáček’s revolutionary Sinfonietta.  \n  \n\nCo-presented with Virginia Arts Festival \n \nThese performances are made possible through a generous gift from the Susan Goode Performance Fund. \nEric Jacobsen serves as the Virginia Symphony Orchestra’s twelfth Music Director\, a position he’s held since 2021.  He is also artistic director and co-founder of The Knights\, the uniquely adventurous NYC-based chamber orchestra\, and Music Director of the Orlando Philharmonic. In addition to conducting\, Eric is a dedicated chamber musician (cello) and is a member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble. \nAlex Sopp is a Brooklyn-based flutist and visual artist whose playing has been praised as “exquisite” by the New York Times. A member of yMusic\, The Knights\, and NOW Ensemble\, she has collaborated with artists ranging from Paul Simon and Philip Glass to Sufjan Stevens and The National\, while her distinctive artwork has been commissioned by musicians\, brands\, and organizations alike. \nThe 26/27 season marks the 37th anniversary of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra Chorus\, and its 30th under the direction of Chorusmaster Robert Shoup.  In addition to regular appearances with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra\, the chorus has performed to sold-out houses as far afield as Prague\, Vienna\, Berlin\, Leipzig\, Munich\, Salzburg and closer to home at the Kennedy Center in Washington\, D.C.

DESCRIPTION:Illustrating Sound\nEric Jacobsen\, conductor\nAlex Sopp\, visual artist\nVirginia Symphony Orchestra Chorus \nMaurice Ravel: Daphnis et Chloe Suite No. 2\nCaroline Shaw: The Mountain that Loved a Bird\nLeoš Janáček: Sinfonietta \nOne of the “most beautiful creations in all of French music” (Igor Stravinsky)\, Ravel’s Second Suite from Daphnis and Chloe lushly depicts a love that survives against all odds. \nCo-presented with Virginia Arts Festival \n \nThese performances are made possible through a generous gift from the Susan Goode Performance Fund.
