Virginia Symphony Orchestra

Community Outreach

Virginia Symphony Orchestra is

In the CommUNITY!

We don’t just keep our music in the concert halls. We love sharing the joy and magic of our symphony all across Hampton Roads. Below are some of the recent programs we have been honored to be a part of.

An Evening of Hope

In October of 2022, Virginia Symphony Orchestra partnered with the Urban Renewal Center, a local organization committed to inspiring others to make positive changes in Hampton Roads, and WAVY 10 to host An Evening of Hope, a free concert open to the public. This special evening was an opportunity to bring the community together to honor and remember those affected by gun violence, as well support those who serve our on the frontline in our local neighborhoods.

In Fall 2022, Virginia Beach native, Pharrell Williams, launched MIGHTY DREAM, a multi-day forum in Norfolk, Virginia where matters of business, opportunity and money intersected with people of color, set against a backdrop of community engagement and jaw-dropping entertainment. Members of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra were invited to play at this powerful event.

Thomas Wilkins Visits Soundscapes

“Making music is a beautiful thing… But the other thing that I see is that there is a belief in themselves and there is a belief in the people that are around them.”

Virginia Symphony Orchestra Principal Guest Conductor, Thomas Wilkins, recently visited Carver Elementary School in Newport News, taking part in music education through local organization Soundscapes.

Here’s a look at Wilkins’ visit – and, in his own words, how important music is in the lives of children across Hampton Roads.
