Dear Friends of the VSO,

What a wonderful start to the 2026–27 season! September brought so many memorable moments, from VSO’s opening weekend featuring Mahler’s Titan Symphony to our special September 25 performance and recording of Philip Glass’s Symphony new Symphony No. 15. Thanks to you, the Virginia Symphony Orchestra is the third orchestra to perform this remarkable new work, and the very first to record it. Your support makes moments like this possible, and we are so grateful to share them with you.

October brings even more opportunities to experience the VSO, including the annual CommUNITY Play-In & Sing-Along, Amadeus Live, Mozart’s Gran Partita, and our John Williams & Steven Spielberg programs. There is so much to look forward to this month.

Most importantly, thank you. Whether you join us in the concert hall or support the Virginia Symphony Orchestra through a gift, you help bring extraordinary music, meaningful experiences, and a vibrant arts community to Hampton Roads. This season is possible because of you.

We look forward to sharing all that October has in store with you!

Maestro’s Picks

Inside the VSO’s Spotify Playlist:

What Is Maestro Eric Jacobsen Listening To This Month?

CLAUDE DEBUSSY: PRELUDE TO THE AFTERNOON OF A FAUN

From the very first flute solo, Debussy seems to suspend time. I’ve been returning to this piece for its extraordinary colors and for the reminder that the quiet moments can be just as, if not more, powerful than loud ones (a good reminder for life, too!).

CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE: NO RHYME, NO REASON

I am so lucky to get to work with Christian McBride and would encourage you to check him out if you aren’t familiar! I am ever impressed by how he seamlessly and incredibly blends so many different genres into one.

OSVALDO GOLIJOV – EVER YOURS: II. STARBOUND

Osvaldo is a dear friend and an incredible composer. He is a thought-provoking writer, a genre-bender, and he uses technology to enhance his pieces in such a unique way. I cannot wait to have him with us in Virginia sometime soon!

Dance by Anna Clyne

MOVEMENT I. …when you’re broken open

Last season, we opened with Anna Clyne’s beautiful DANCE, featuring the extraordinary cellist Jan Vogler. It was a performance filled with energy, emotion, and connection and one we’re still thinking about.

Now, you can experience a piece of that evening for yourself. Enjoy this never-before-seen recording of the concerto’s first movement, performed by Jan Vogler with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and Music Director Eric Jacobsen.

Moments like this are at the heart of what we do. Thank you for being part of the VSO family and for helping us bring incredible music and artists to Hampton Roads.

We hope you enjoy this special performance and we look forward to sharing many more musical moments with you soon.

We’re Excited to See you at a Concert Soon!
