Virginia Symphony Orchestra
Harmony Project
The Harmony Project fosters relationships between African-American church congregations and the Virginia Symphony Orchestra through performances, educational and social interaction in the church and in the concert hall.
There are three ways that the Virginia Symphony Orchestra seeks to be involved with the church congregation: church services, educational experiences and community concerts.
Additionally, all of our Harmony Project Churches join for our annual Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. which is traditionally held the Sunday before the official Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday.
We also provide access to complimentary and discounted tickets to Virginia Symphony Concerts for church members.
The Virginia Symphony Orchestra with a complement of 60+ professional musicians under the direction Music Director Eric Jacobsen and guest conductor, Thomas Wilkins, performs 140 concerts annually, reaching 200,000 concert goers every season in venues throughout the region. The Virginia Symphony Orchestra is the cultural cornerstone of the performing arts in Hampton Roads.
1, 2, 3, PLAY!
Church Service:
The first way that the Virginia Symphony may serve church congregations is by playing appropriate music during worship services. The Virginia Symphony Orchestra community engagement staff will work with the church liaison to schedule selected church dates, when the VSO musicians should play within the service and select appropriate music for the service.
Educational Experiences:
The second way that the Virginia Symphony may serve church congregations is by providing engaging educational experiences for both children and adults. In this day and age where arts education is fighting for its existence in the school system, educational opportunities for music education must be found in other areas. The Virginia Symphony Orchestra has a nationally recognized education and community engagement program to help create an appropriate program for your church congregation.
Community Concerts:
Imagine filling your church with beautiful chamber music. Musicians from the Virginia Symphony Orchestra play a concert in your church sanctuary. It is an entertaining and informative experience for the whole community.
