HAMPTON ROADS, VA [August 23, 2017] — The Virginia Symphony announces its annual Labor Day concert series, taking place across Hampton Roads. Once again, this summer the Virginia Symphony will perform at outdoor venues in Norfolk, Chesapeake, Williamsburg and Yorktown. All concerts are free and open to the public. The concerts are in celebration of Naval Station Norfolk’s Centennial Celebration.
“We’re delighted to continue to serve our friends and neighbors throughout Hampton Roads by presenting these wonderful free outdoor programs,” stated VSO President and CEO Karen Philion. “These concerts are made possible by our generous community leaders, business partners, colleagues, and, of course, the tens-of-thousands of music lovers who join us each year.”
The programming will vary from marches and patriotic fanfare, to film scores, and perhaps even a few sneak peaks at the season ahead!
Thursday, August 31, 2017 | 7:30 PM | Lake Matoaka, Williamsburg (at the College of William & Mary) The Virginia Symphony Orchestra performs once again at William & Mary’s Lake Matoaka Amphitheatre. Making his conducting debut this evening is special guest, W. Taylor Reveley III, President of the College of William & Mary. Longtime friends and supporters of both the VSO and the College of William & Mary, Charlie and Mari Ann Banks, were the winning bidders of this conducting opportunity at the Virginia Symphony Society of Greater Williamsburg’s annual Gala this past April and gave the opportunity to President Reveley, who graciously accepted. President Reveley will conduct one piece during the concert. Personal coolers and picnic baskets will be permitted; however, no external alcohol will be allowed. Sponsors include the City of Williamsburg, the College of William & Mary, and William & Mary’s Student Assembly.
Saturday, September 2, 2017 | 7:30 PM | Riverwalk Landing, Yorktown The VSO returns to historic Yorktown for its 21st annual performance under the stars. Come early for a pre-concert performance by the Fifes and Drums of Yorktown, and a “just for fun” judging of the most creative picnic set-up at 6 PM. For more information, call 757.890.4490. Sunday, September 3, 2017 | 1:00 PM | Waterside District, Norfolk The Virginia Symphony Orchestra Brass section will perform a medley of songs at the Waterside District along the Elizabeth River in Downtown Norfolk. Free VIP seating will be available on a first-come-first-serve basis with reservation via www.watersidedistrict.com.
Sunday, September 3, 2017 | 7:30 PM | Chesapeake City Park Join the VSO at Chesapeake City Park for a performance on the Bagley Stage. Bring lawn chairs and/or blanket (no pop-up tents permitted). Food vendors on-site. Concessions open for a picnic dinner at 6PM. Concert begins at 7PM. Concert presented by the Chesapeake Fine Arts Commission, ArtsALIVE! and Chesapeake Parks, Recreation & Tourism Department. The concert sponsored by Carl’s Wash.
