Virginia Symphony Orchestra Announces New Board Leadership
HAMPTON ROADS, VA (August 24, 2016) – – Patrick B. McDermott will serve as the Chair of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra for the fiscal year which began July 1. Continuing in their roles as officers of the non-profit corporation are Treasurer, Carolyn Pittman and Secretary, Susan Goode.
Patrick McDermott, an attorney in private practice on the Peninsula for more than 30 years, McDermott has served on the VSO Board since 2012, on the Executive Committee for the past two years, and as Vice-Chair for the 2015-16 season.
McDermott is active in the Hampton Roads community, having served on numerous boards including Alternatives, Inc. (past President), The Center for Excellence in Aging and Geriatric Health, The Hampton Yacht Club Board of Directors, The Session of the First Presbyterian Church of Hampton, Peninsula Agency on Aging Foundation, Hampton Public Library Foundation, Hampton Public Schools Foundation, The American Red Cross, Hampton Roads Chapter, Mennowood Retirement Community (past President) and the Hampton Bar Association (past President). He is currently on the board of TowneBank. Mr. McDermott resides in Williamsburg, with his wife of forty-two years, Elaine, who teaches at Hampton Roads Academy.
After receiving his Bachelor’s degree from Montclair University in 1973, McDermott earned his Law Degree from the College of William and Mary in 1977.
Carolyn Pittman continues her role as treasurer for the 2016-2017 season. Pittman is vice president and controller for Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, located in Newport News, Va. Named to this position in 2015, Pittman has responsibility for accounting and financial compliance, financial planning and reporting, rates and budgets, program financial control, government financial liaison, and earned value management.
Prior to this appointment, Pittman served as vice president and chief financial officer since 2011. She came to the shipyard from Northrop Grumman’s Enterprise Shared Services organization, where she served as vice president and chief financial officer.
Pittman has a bachelor’s degree in accounting/data processing from the University of Arkansas and an M.B.A. in finance from Dallas Baptist University.
Susan Goode will continue serving as Secretary of the VSO Board during the 2016-17 season. She devotes time and support locally, across Virginia, and even nationally as a current member of the Norfolk Public Arts Commission, the Norfolk Commission on the Arts and Humanities, and the collection committee of the Chrysler Museum of Art.
She also sits on the boards of Americans for the Arts, Virginia Wesleyan College, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and is secretary for the board of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. She received an Honorary Doctorate degree from Roanoke College in 2008. She and her husband, David R. Goode, retired CEO of the Norfolk Southern Corporation, received the Governor’s Arts Award in 2008.
Goode studied history at Duke University, and has kept up a lifelong interest in the arts, music, and humanities.
